GENERAL INFORMATION/MISSION STATEMENT

Ministering to children and Families in the Community since 1971, Bon View School for Early Childhood Education is the Weekday Preschool Ministry of Bon Air United Methodist Church.  The school is located in the first floor classrooms of the Education Building of the church, which is located at the corner of Buford Road and Bon View Drive.

BON VIEW SCHOOL'S MISSION STATEMENT

The Bon View School serves as an outreach ministry for young children, age 2 to 6, in our Church and community with the mission of providing an environment for SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL, PHYSICAL, LANGUAGE, COGNITIVE,AESTHETIC and SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT formed and shaped by Judaic-Christian values and God’s Love and Acceptance of us All.

PHILOSOPHY AND GOALS

Bon View’s preschool GOALS are to provide nurturing classroom environments and developmentally appropriate curriculum and experiences, which enhance the children’s growth in the five major areas of development and in their spiritual and aesthetic development as well. It is our belief that young children learn BEST by DOING, which is supported by Piaget’s research and current BRAIN research.  Therefore, Bon View is well equipped with manipulatives, materials and HANDS-ON learning opportunities appropriate for children 2 to 6.

ADMISSION PROCEDURES

ADMISSION is made to Bon View School without regard to race, creed or nationality.  A child must be toilet trained prior to his/her entrance in the school for any program other than the 2's or Young 3's.  Please note the age-admission guidelines for the various programs listed in this brochure.

CURRICULUM

At Bon View we use a “THEMATIC” Approach to learning, which is expanded upon by student interest and parent input.  It is further enhanced by integrating the curriculum with Art, Music, Movement, Drama, Literature and Multi-sensory Experiences.  Curriculum is age appropriate and geared to the interests of the children.  Field trips and resource people further enrich and expand upon classroom experiences.

TEACHING STAFF

Bon View teachers are dedicated, college degreed and experienced former private/public school teachers.  Our staff retention rate has remained high throughout our 37 years.

Our staff is composed of PROFESSIONALS who keep abreast of how young children learn together with the best teaching practices in Early Childhood Education through: college courses and graduate studies, participation in professional organizations, attendance at workshops, conferences, seminars, and continuous reading of professional journals and books and Internet research.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

An ORIGINAL BIRTH CERTIFICATE must be witnessed by the school’s Business Administrator or Director prior to the child’s first day of school.  Parents should contact the local Bureau of Vital Statistics in the state in which their children were born for this document.  If you plan to enroll your child in this school, it would be wise to contact your local Bureau NOW.

Also, prior to the first of September of each school year every student is required to have on file a current COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA SCHOOL ENTRANCE PHYSICAL EXAMINATION AND IMMUNIZATION FORM which is completed and signed by a licensed physician and which is based upon a 2008 physical examination.  ALSO, Part I-Health Information must be completed, signed and dated by the parents.

SNACKS/LUNCHES

Mid-morning snacks are furnished by the PARENTS of the children in the 2's, 3's/Young 4's, and 3-day 4’s/5's programs.  Parents of our 5-day 4’s/5's and 5’s students provide a lunch each day for their children.  Parents in all the programs are encouraged to send healthy, nutritional food for their children.

TRANSPORTATION

Parents will provide transportation to and from the Bon View School AND on Field Trips as well.

TUITION FEES

Tuition is based upon the cost for the school year and may be paid by the year, semester or by the Tuition Installment Plan; through the years most of our patrons have elected to use this plan.  There is a modest tuition increase each year to defray the cost of increased staff salaries and operational costs. A Schedule of Fees for 2008-2009 will be included with the Enrollment Data, which will be sent to all the 2008-2009 Enrollees at the end of January 2008.

PROGRAM INFORMATION

Our half-day preschool programs offer students engaging learning opportunities in friendly, relaxed and nurturing classroom environments. Our groups are small -- within accreditation guidelines -- and each group has both a teacher and assistant teacher. At Bon View the UNIQUENESS of every child is valued, and the staff understands that each child ‘s development occurs according to his/her own time schedule.  Accordingly, our staff is well prepared to assess and provide for the needs of the children and to work closely with their families to maximize each child ‘s potential.

FIVE’S PROGRAM

The 5’s Program is composed of children who turn FIVE by early fall of the year enrolled; preference in enrollment will be given to those children who turn five by September 30 of the year enrolled.  Although these children are chronologically old enough for Kindergarten; their parents’ objective in enrolling them in the 5’s Program is to give them the “gift of time” for further development prior to entering kindergarten.  The children are assigned according to age in these two five-day (Monday-Friday) groups; their hours are 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

4’s/5’s PROGRAMS

This program consists of two formats:  3-day (two classes) and 5-day (one class).  The 3-day 4’s/5’s attend on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  The children in this program are also assigned to their groups according to chronological age.  Preference in enrolling will be given to children who are four years old on or before August 1 of the year enrolled.  The 5-day 4’s/5’s attend school Monday-Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  Preference is given to children who turn four by May 1 of the year enrolled and to current Bon View students.

3's/YOUNG 4’s PROGRAM

The 3’s/Young 4’s Program consists of four different groups-three 3-day groups and one two-day group; all attend from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  The Monday-Wednesday-Friday and Tuesday-Thursday-Friday groups were designed for the young four year old.  First preference for the M-W-F group will be given to children who turn 4 by December 31 of the year enrolled.  The T-Th-F group is designed for children who turn 3 by May 1 of the year enrolled.  The Monday-Tuesday-Thursday and Tuesday-Thursday groups were designed for 3 year olds who turn three by July 1 of the year enrolled.

YOUNG 3's PROGRAMS

The Young 3’s Program consists of two different groups—both attend from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  The Monday-Wednesday and Tuesday-Thursday groups were designed for children who turn 3 in the summer and fall of the year enrolled.  It is not a requirement that these children will be toilet trained prior to their entrance in school.  Preference for enrolling in these groups will be given to children who turn 3 by October 31 of the year enrolled.

2’s PROGRAMS

The 2’s Program consists of two different groups—both attend from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.  The Wednesday-Friday and Tuesday-Thursday groups were created for children who are 2 to 2 ½  years old; preference will be given to the children who will be 2 ½ by September 1 of the year enrolled. It is not a requirement that these children will be toilet trained prior to their entrance in school.

It is an expectation that all of the children enrolled in the 3’s/4’s, 4’s/5’s or 5’s programs will be toilet trained by the first day of school.  Enrollment in the 2’s or Young 3’s is the appropriate placement for children not yet toilet trained.
